What is a Denver Nuggets Fan?

Being a Nugget fan is not about winning. There, I said it.

Being a Nugget Fan today is, it appears, about looking back. We hold on tightly to Doug Moe. Doug gave us more. We debate ABA day teams performance against current teams. We have dreams of another “Mutombo Moment” or watching “Chris Jackson” tear-up the court against Jordan. Any number of past performances seem to be what many CURRENT Nuggets fans think about and discuss. Most don’t like to look too close at THIS year… because we pretty much know what the result is going to be.

I like to think that Vicki and I love the Nuggets as much if not more than the next fan. And frankly, regardless of their performance that is not going to change for us. Sure, there are plenty of fans that have been following the team longer than we have, but they also have no championship to show for their extra years.

So who does win the Championship and what are our chances of having one in Denver? Let’s go back to about 1947 just to get a good idea.

In the last 62 years 5 teams, (Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers,St. Louis Hawks and Boston Celtics) account for almost half (30 of 62, 48%) of the runner-up spots. They made it to the finals but didn’t win.

In the past 62 years 5 teams, (Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Minneapolis Lakers and San Antonio Spurs) account for over half (41 of 62, 66%) of the Championships.

With more teams now than ever before, the realistic chance that the Nuggets will move into the “Top 5” teams is quite small indeed. Even the “Top 10” seems to be a pipe dream. Making it to the Playoffs at all this year is probably a concern. Making it to the 2nd round seems to be a more reasonable goal.

Now, with what little defense we had being given to the Clippers and walking away to KiKi I have to wonder what the new season will bring. Will our role of players suddenly become the team to beat? Maybe is always a good word. Maybe we can beat the odds. Maybe we can “make the list”. Maybe we can be like the Rochester Royals or Baltimore Bullets or Saint Louis Hawks or Syracuse Nationals and come out of no where to win. Maybe. I like that word. It gives us Nugget fans the yearly hope we deserve.
