Upgrade your WordPress site
Well, it was only a matter of time before hackers began to target the amazingly popular software WordPress.
Less than 24 hours ago, self-hosted WordPress sites began to see phantom ‘Admin’ users created as well as other problems. The issue(s) thus far have targeted WordPress sites which are not yet upgraded to version 2.8.4. Here is the Official WordPress comment.
The ever-popular site Lorelle appears to be the first to report the problems with this post.
This is indeed a serious outbreak. While upgrading itself may perhaps cause some issues with certain plug-ins, the need far exceeds any issues you will experience.
To ensure a relatively easy upgrade, it is suggested that you first deactivate the majority of non-critical plug-ins, perform the upgrade and then one by one, reactivate your plugins as you test your site. Yes, it can be time consuming but finding yourself locked out of your site and having to kill your entire site and start over with a fresh WP install is much more of a problem.
Note, if you are upgrading from 2.7x your upgrade ‘path’ is likely to cause you more heartburn, depending mainly on which plug-ins you may use. Be prepared to be patient.
Finally, if you still do not backup your website on a regular basis (daily?) we strongly suggest you start. There are many fine plug-ins to automate the process. Try WordPress’s plug-in page here.
Best wishes,
